英語で語る『ステレオタイプ』の呪縛～ベトナム編～

前回に引き続き『stereotype』について英語でお話していきましょう！

今回のテーマは『ベトナム』

皆さんはベトナムに対してどのようなイメージがありますか？

『ステレオタイプ』とは何？

前回の復習です↓↓

ステレオタイプ

ある集団や人々に対して広く信じられている固定観念や先入観のことです。これらは必ずしも事実に基づいているわけではなく、誤解や偏見を生むことがあります。

A stereotype is a widely held but oversimplified and fixed idea or belief about a particular group of people. These beliefs are often not based on facts and can lead to misunderstandings or prejudice.

ベトナムに対して持っていた『ステレオタイプ』

私が渡越前に持っていたステレオタイプの中から２つをご紹介します。

発展途上国なので生活が不便

インターネットの速度が遅いかも…仕事に支障がでたらどうしよう。シャワーのお湯は出るのかな？交通インフラは？医療は？沢山の不安がありました。
The internet might be slow… I was worried it might affect my work. Would the shower have hot water? What about transportation infrastructure? What about medical services? I had so many concerns.

Fact:
※都心のお話で地方に行くと状況は違います
ネット環境は快適です。カフェやレストランにはフリーWi-Fiが沢山。若者はTikTokに夢中です。シャワーのお湯は物件を選べば基本的に問題なく出ます。
The internet environment is comfortable. Many cafés and restaurants offer free Wi-Fi. Young people are obsessed with TikTok. As long as you choose the property, hot water in the shower is generally not a problem.

電車がほぼないのでその点不便ですが、タクシー配車サービスが充実しており料金も安く便利です。車よりバイクの方が圧倒的に多いですが、最近は自家用車の保有率も上がってきておりLEXUSのような高級車もたまに見かけます。
There are few trains, which makes transportation somewhat inconvenient, but taxi app services are widely available, affordable, and convenient. There are much more motorbikes than cars, but recently, private car ownership has been increasing, and sometimes you’ll see luxury cars, such as LEXUS.

医療も保険に入っていれば困る事は無いでしょう。日本語通訳もしていただけますし、日本人の先生も思ったより沢山いらっしゃいます。大病は日本帰国を検討した方が良いかもしれません。
※医療に関してはベトナム在住の日本人の環境であり、詳細は長くなるので割愛しますがベトナム人の医療環境はまた違います。
As long as you have insurance, healthcare shouldn’t be a problem. Japanese interpretation services are available, and there are more Japanese doctors than you might expect. For serious illnesses, it may be wise to consider returning to Japan.

ベトナム人はみんな陽気で外交的

Fact:
確かに上記のような国民性はあると思います。しかし人間性格はそれぞれ。ベトナム人でもシャイで控え目な人もいます。とある男の子はとてもシャイで、小学校入学から２年間、昼休みはお友達と話すこともなく一人でバスケに励んでいたそうです。それぞれの国民性はありますが、ベトナム人だからこうだろう、日本人だからこうだろう、と思い込むのは危険ですね。
It’s true that certain national characteristics exist, as mentioned above. However, each person has their own personality. Even among Vietnamese people, there are those who are shy and reserved. One boy, for example, was so shy that for the first two years after entering elementary school, he spent his lunch breaks playing basketball alone without talking to any of his classmates. While national traits do exist, it’s dangerous to assume that someone will behave a certain way just because they’re Vietnamese or Japanese.
