英語で語る『ステレオタイプ』の呪縛～駐妻編～

Hi there!! ベトナム在住講師Megです。

ありがたいことにオンラインと言う特質もあってワールドトークの講師としてお仕事を継続させていただいておりますが、私がベトナムに来た理由は夫の仕事の帯同。つまりMegは駐妻というやつなのであります。

皆さんの駐妻のイメージってどうですか？ぶっちゃけ私はあまり良いイメージを持っていませんでした（笑）ベトナムに来る前の私が持っていたステレオタイプについての実情を英語でお届けしたいと思います。

『ステレオタイプ』とは何？

ステレオタイプ

ある集団や人々に対して広く信じられている固定観念や先入観のことです。これらは必ずしも事実に基づいているわけではなく、誤解や偏見を生むことがあります。

A stereotype is a widely held but oversimplified and fixed idea or belief about a particular group of people. These beliefs are often not based on facts and can lead to misunderstandings or prejudice.

駐妻に対して持っていた『ステレオタイプ』

駐妻カースト / Caste system among expat wives

駐妻カーストが存在し、上のカーストのママ友がマウントを取る。
Among expat wives, a kind of caste system exists, and moms in the upper tiers tend to show off or look down on others.

一昔前は外交官妻や商社妻がもてはやされていた駐妻カースト。最近はインフルエンサーがトップなのだそうですね。
In the past, the expat wife hierarchy favored the wives of diplomats and trading company executives. These days, however, it seems that influencers have taken the top spot.

Fact:
幸運なことに私の周りでカーストを感じることは一切ありません。皆さんとてもフレンドリーで夫の仕事を探りあったり、それを元にマウントを取り合うこともありません。
Fortunately, I don’t feel any sense of hierarchy among the people around me. Everyone is very friendly, and no one tries to pry into each other’s husbands’ jobs or use that information to assert superiority.

ランチ三昧 / Lunch lover

毎日のようにおしゃれなランチを楽しんでいる。
They treat themselves to fashionable lunches nearly every day.

Fact:
そのような方もいらっしゃるかもしれませんがMegは違います。いくら物価の安いベトナムでも、駐妻が好む比較的綺麗目なレストランで毎日ランチしたら私は破産します…
Some people might be like that, but I’m not. Even though Vietnam has a low cost of living, if I had lunch every day at the kind of stylish restaurants expat wives tend to prefer, I’d go bankrupt.
