「学生」「大学生」「大学院生」は英語で何と言う？学年や College・University の違いも徹底解説！
英語で自己紹介をしたり、家族について話したりするとき、「学生」「大学生」「大学院生」といった表現はよく使います。
しかし、日本語の「学生」は非常に便利な言葉ですが、英語では学校の種類や学習段階によって使う単語が異なります。また、「大学3年生」「修士課程の学生」「大学院に通っています」なども、それぞれ決まった言い方があります。
今回は、学生に関する英語表現をまとめてご紹介します。
Student（学生）
student は最も一般的な表現で、「勉強している人」を意味します。

I am a student.
私は学生です。
My son is a student.
息子は学生です。
She is a student at a local school.
彼女は地元の学校の学生です。
student は小学生から大学院生まで幅広く使える便利な単語です。
Elementary School Student（小学生）
Examples
My daughter is an elementary school student.
娘は小学生です。

日常会話では、

のような表現がよく使われます。
Middle School Student（中学生）
現在のアメリカ英語では middle school が一般的です。

junior high school も間違いではありませんが、現在は middle school の方が一般的です。
High School Student（高校生）

College Student（大学生）
アメリカ英語では college student が最も一般的な表現です。

Undergraduate Student（学部生）
大学院生ではなく、学士課程の学生を指します。

College・University・Community College の違い
日本語ではどれも「大学」と訳されることがありますが、アメリカでは意味が異なります。
College
college は大学を表す最も一般的な言葉です。

娘は大学生です。
日常会話では、Harvard University や Stanford University の学生であっても、
I’m in college.
と言うことがよくあります。
University
university は複数の学部や大学院を持つ大規模な教育機関です。

彼女はハーバード大学で学んでいます。
He graduated from Stanford University.
彼はスタンフォード大学を卒業しました。
一般的に university は college より規模が大きく、大学院を持つことが多いです。
Community College
community college は主に2年制の公立大学です。

息子はコミュニティカレッジに通っています。
She plans to transfer from a community college to a university.
彼女はコミュニティカレッジから大学へ編入する予定です。
Community college の特徴
・授業料が比較的安い
・Associate Degree（準学士号）を取得できる
・4年制大学への編入制度が充実している
・社会人や留学生も多い
大学生の学年
アメリカでは大学生の学年を次のように表現します。
freshman = 大学1年生
sophomore = 大学2年生
junior = 大学3年生
senior = 大学4年生
