今回はちょっと変化球です。これは基礎英文法のテキストでも取り上げていないのですが、実は関係代名詞のthatだけが使われるケースがあるので、ここで練習しておきたいと思います。

① 先行詞が 最上級・序数 を含むとき

best / first / last / only などがあると→ that のみ

• This is the best movie that I have ever seen.
  （これは私が今まで見た中で一番良い映画です）
• She is the first student that came to class.
  （彼女は最初にクラスに来た生徒です）

② 先行詞が all / everything / something / nothing / anything などのとき

先行詞が「内容を広くまとめる語」ではthatが最も自然

• Everything that he said was true.
  （彼が言ったことはすべて本当だった）
• There is nothing that I can do.
  （私にできることは何もない）

③ 先行詞に the only / the very / the same がつくとき

強調表現があるとthatを使う

• She is the only person that understands me.
  （彼女は私を理解してくれる唯一の人です）
• This is the very book that I was looking for.
  （これこそ私が探していた本です）

④ 先行詞が 人＋物 の両方を含むとき

人・物が混ざる時はthat

• They talked about the people and things that they saw.
  （彼らは見た人や物について話した）

⑤ 疑問文・強調構文で使われることが多いとき

疑問文・強調ではthatが文として自然

• Who is the man that is standing there?
  （あそこに立っている男性は誰ですか）
