5. She loves him ( by / despite ) his mountains of faults.

6. Everyone was present at the meeting ( except / without ) Bob.

Answers for Exercise 1

1. You can reserve the tickets by phone.　
あなたは予約できます/チケットを/電話で＊通信手段のby

2. The price of gas has gone up by 10% in the past two months.
ガス代は上がっている/10％/過去２ヶ月で　＊差のby

3. We can’t survive without water.
私たちは生存できない/水なしでは　＊exceptだと「水以外は」の意味

4. I was very nervous because I was interviewed by four directors.
私はとても緊張した/なぜなら面談されたから/４人の重役によって　＊受け身のby、動作主

5. She loves him despite his mountains of faults.
彼女は愛してる/彼を/彼の山のような欠点にもかかわらず　＊同じ意味の言い換えに in spite of

6. Everyone was present at the meeting except Bob.
みんな出席していた/会議に/ボブ以外は＊without だと「ボブなしで」の意味

7. I haven’t read any books by Shakespeare*.　　　*=シェイクスピア
私は読んでいない/どんな本も/シェイクスピア著の　＊作者

Exercise 2 change the preposition

太字の前置詞を正しい前置詞に改めなさい。

1. Be sure to come back till eight o’clock. →(　　　　)
*8時までに戻ってくること！

2. I’ll be back after half an hour.　　 →(　　　　)　
*30分後に戻ってきます

3. The author died in the morning of December 24^th.　 →(　　　　)

4. We went shopping to the department store yesterday.　 →(　　　　)

これらは間違えやすい前置詞の代表です。ではさっそく答え合わせにいきましょう！

Answers for Exercise２

1. Be sure to come back by eight o’clock. → *8時までに戻ってくること！
come backは戻ってくるですが、それにtillがつくと、戻り続けるという意味になってしまいます😅

2. I’ll be back in half an hour. →「30分後に戻ってきます」という意味にしたければ、in「〜後」でしたね。ちなみに「〜以内」ならwithin です

3. The author died on the morning of December 24^th.→普通に「午前中」だけなら in the morning なのですが、具体的な日付や曜日に、朝・昼・夜がプラスされた場合はonになります🤓

4. We went shopping at the department store yesterday. →動詞のwent(go)につられてtoと間違えやすいのですが、toにしてしまうと、デパートに向かいながら買い物したことになります😅 atを持ってくると「デパートで」となって、落ち着いて買い物できますね😆
